Andong Byongsan Seowon North Gyeongsang Province Seowon South Korea
Byeongsan Seowon in Andong is a Confucian school, typical of local academies during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). Established in 1563 in Pungsanhyeon and given the name Pungak Seodang, the academy was re-established as Jondeoksa in 1572 when was moved to the present location in Andong by Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607). In 1613 esteemed Confucian scholars put up a memorial tablet to Ryu Seong-ryong to immortalize his scholastic achievements, and to pay tribute to the memory the Confucian scholar and politician who was well-respected for his writings and personality. The name was changed to "Byeongsan Seowon" (Academy of the Mountains Folding Screens) in 1614. Ryu Seong-ryong's mortuary tablet is still enshrined here.
