Jeongchwiam (Buddhist hermitage) was established in 686CE by Monk Uisangdaesa during the reign of King Sinmun of Silla (era) on the slopes of Daeseongsan (mountain) just north of Jirisan National Park. Inside Daeungjeon (main worship hall) in the center of the main altar sits the Gwanseeumbosal (The Bodhisattva of Compassion) Gyeongnam Province Material Treasure #314. Jeongchwiam is one of the Nine Scenic Views of Sancheong. Legend says that in 686CE Amitabha Buddha rose from East Sea and two beams of light shone, one on Geumgangsan and the other on Daeseongsan. Monk Uisangdaisa followed the beams of light and built Wontongam (hermitage) on Geumgangsan (mountain) and Jeongchwiam on Daeseongsan (mountain).
