A hyanggyo is a local school from the Joseon Era (1392-1897), established by the government for the study of Confucianism. The Suncheon Hyanggyo was founded at Dongchil-ri, Suncheon, in1407 and relocated to the present location in 1801.

The Hyanggyo has the following historical structures: Myeongryundang (lecture hall), located in front of Daeseongjeon ( Confucian shrine hall) - typical arrangement style of hyanggyos of the era, Bukmu and Nammu (north and south shrines), Bukjae and Namjae (north and south dormitories), Oesammun (three section outer gate), and Sinsammun (three section inner gate).


Suncheon Hyanggyo's buildings represent the typical characteristics of Hyanggyo construction of the period having a layout of rectangular intersections on each horizontal and vertical axis. Each building expresses the traditional style in design of the Joseon Era.
