Nammyeon Jo Sik Historic Site - Nammyeong (1501-1572) was one of the greatest Confucius scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. His name was Jo Sik, however, he was best known by his pen name, Nammyeong. The government tried to persuade him to enter the government service several times, but he refused. He however displayed a strong affection for the people and the nation by criticizing government corruption and the king. Deokcheon Seowon, part academy, part shrine, was constructed in 1576 by Nammyeong’s pupils as a tribute to his memory. The layout of the academy is typical – a space for study in the center, with living quarters either side of the courtyard, with the ritual shrine, Yeojaesil, in back. Yeojaesil is a family ancestral shrine for memorial tablets of Confucian scholar Nammyeong Jo Sik , and his two wives. Descendants gather here to perform memorial rites. Memorial Hall is a museum of Nammyeong’s life and works.
