Refugees who came to Daeijakdo (island) to escape oppression by Japan during the Imjin War and could not return to their hometowns after the war remained on the island and committed piracy. Now called Daeijakdo, the island was called Daeijeokdo, a place where pirates dwelled, during that era. The rocks found in this area are migmatites, (rock of mixed appearance, being an intimate mixture of granite and older rock, specifically from intense metamorphism which partially melts the rock, causing it to re-crystallize in a state intermediate between igneous and metamorphic rock that were formed deep inside of the earth). The migmatites here were created with temperatures of 1300-1400°F and great pressure, about 6-8 miles under ground. Formations found on Deaijakdo are the oldest rocks in Korea, as much as 2 trillion years older than any of the other bed rock found in the country, yielding significant information about the geological history of the peninsula.
